Ancient History
The island was settled during prehistoric times and later colonized by the Greeks, who named it Korkyra Melaina. During the Roman period it became an important trading center.
Venetian Period
During the Middle Ages Korčula came under the influence of the Venetian Republic. The famous stone walls of Korčula Town and many historic buildings date from this period.
Marco Polo
The island is traditionally believed to be the birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo, whose travels introduced Europe to many parts of Asia.
